DESIGN FOR MIGRATION

Design for Migration was a university project based on any type of migration of your choice. My chosen area was with the migration of polar bears. This choice was made after some research prior to the project and thought it would be a good opportunity to look into climate change and architecture.

The location of my project was Baffin Island, Canada; this area is a key part of a polar bears annual migration. After researching the patterns of polar bar migration it lead me onto the research of different types of ice in the arctic and how endangered the polar bears are in those areas.

Primarily I looked into the idea of creating some form of artificial ice that would last all year round but that concept had already been considered and come to the conclusion that it wouldn't work long term. This then lead me to think about the researchers and how they could monitor the polar bears and sea ice.

The colour study was to look into each colour and the kind of emotions associated with it. With the researchers being in the arctic for long periods of time they would need to be kept mentally healthy, especially with the majority of their time being indoors. I used the colour study to make a 'stained glass' box so when the sun moved round different colours would shine through into the space. I created this by using the colour study to put colour into the landscape, this idea got developed through using different medias and inspiration from Olafur Eliasson's - Rainbow Panorama.
